Lacustrine Brown Trout: The Lake Fish a River Makes

There is a fish you can hunt on a big alpine lake until the fuel runs out. The water is clear, the drop-offs are steep, the sounder shows baitfish at every depth — and still almost nobody catches a lake-dwelling brown trout. The reason is rarely in the lake. It is in a stream, often twenty kilometres away, usually behind a weir. Because this fish grows up in the lake, but it is made in a river. For forty-two articles the answer in this series has been in the water the fish is standing in: depth, current, gauge height, calendar, mouthful size. Here, for the first time, it is in a different body of water from the one you are fishing. Hence the pole: the inflow.

A lake fish that a river makes

First the inconvenient truth about the name. This is not a separate species. GBIF resolves *Salmo trutta lacustris* (Linnaeus, 1758) as a synonym — usageKey 6169664, rank subspecies, matchType EXACT, confidence 98, accepted under 8215487: *Salmo trutta*. Wikidata keeps it as its own item Q646602 but labels it explicitly „form of brown trout". The brochure of the international Lake Constance bodies puts it in one line: science counts stream trout and lake trout as a single species, „genetically they are siblings and therefore carry the same Latin name". ⚠️ Same species, two life decisions. One stays for life in the stretch of stream where it hatched — that is the brown trout of the rivers, and the current decides its fate. The other drops down into the lake as a juvenile, finds food in abundance and grows large. Lake Constance fish reach over a metre and almost 15 kg; the commercial fishermen call them „silver bars", and silver is exactly what they turn shortly before descending into the lake. But they cannot shed their origin. To spawn they must return to the river they hatched in, and they find it by smell, because „the tributaries of Lake Constance each have their own specific smell". Historically they covered over 145 km on that journey, from the lake past Disentis on the Vorderrhein, and climbed to over 1300 m — in the Landquart as far as above Klosters. A lake fish that commutes into the high Alps every year.

What happens when the inflow closes

And now the part that turns this pole from an angling claim into a measured series. Until about 1950 the commercial fishermen of Lake Constance landed an average of 10 to 12 tonnes of lake trout a year. Between 1890 and 1970 the construction of hydropower on the Alpenrhein, the Vorderrhein and Hinterrhein and many other tributaries barred „the last migration routes to the large and vitally important spawning grounds". The consequence is stated literally: the migratory lake trout „could soon no longer reach even a tenth of its original spawning grounds". And then the number everything runs towards: „Around 1970 the spawning runs of the ‚Lake Constance salmon' dried up and the yield fell back to about three tonnes a year." From twelve to three. ⚠️ What matters is what did not change in that period. The lake itself was still there — large, deep and full of baitfish. What disappeared was not the adult fish's habitat, but the road to its nursery. The Kennelbach weir near Bregenz, for instance, has slowed the migration „since about 1900; even today its fish pass works only to a limited extent".

The counter-proof nobody ordered

Back then people tried to solve the problem with fish instead of with rivers — and accidentally produced the cleanest evidence for the pole. The residual yield of the 1970s could „only be maintained by intensive stocking of juveniles bought in from other lakes". And then comes the sentence that explains everything: ⚠️ „Such unadapted animals, however, no longer migrated." Fish that had not hatched in that tributary carried no imprint of it — and without imprinting there is no spawning run, and without a spawning run there is no next generation. The stocking filled the statistics and still did not replace the river. Only afterwards did anyone turn the right screw: the international water-protection commission was founded in 1959, and in 1983 the fisheries conference set up its „Lake Trout Working Group". „The minimum size was raised, two closed seasons introduced and protected areas established in the mouths of the tributaries" — and „the removal of the first migration barriers also began in the 1980s". ⚠️ That this is still the decisive lever is clear from the causal report of 2021: the decline in spawner numbers is „detectable in all stock-relevant spawning waters, with few exceptions (e.g. the Bregenzerach)". The exception is precisely the tributary where most has been done for passability.

  • Look for the fish through the river, not through the lake. The question before the day is not „where is the deepest edge" but „which tributary of this lake is passable and carries spawners". A lake with one intact inflow holds lake trout; an equally beautiful lake without one holds almost none.
  • The river mouth is the centre of the year — and therefore often closed. Before running up, the fish gather off the tributary. That is exactly where the protected areas lie. Not a coincidence: the authorities protect the one place where the fish is predictable.
  • Stocking does not replace an inflow. If a water only carries fish because it is stocked, you are fishing for animals without migratory behaviour — with a different distribution and a different annual rhythm from a genuine lake trout population.
  • Turbidity out of the inflow is a signal, not a nuisance. The incoming river carries food, oxygen and cover into the lake. The plume off the mouth is an edge like any other — only one that changes with the weather in the catchment, not the weather on your bank.
  • Count in years, not hours. In the lake the fish need 2 to 3 years to reach maturity. A stock that looks empty today responds only years after an improvement upstream — and a collapse upstream shows up in the lake with the same delay.
  • Do not treat it as a big brown trout. It is the same species but not the same fishery: one stands in its stretch of stream all year, the other is an open-water fish for most of its life that enters a river only to spawn.

And now the paperwork, because something has just changed. ⚠️ Lake Constance Obersee, 2026: the individual order of the Tübingen regional council implementing the decisions of the International Plenipotentiary Conference for Lake Constance Fisheries, dated 15 December 2025, amends § 16(1) of the Lake Constance Fisheries Ordinance. The line now reads: „Lake/brown trout | closed season 1 November to 10 January | minimum size 60 cm." It was 50 cm before. The reasoning is in black and white in the 2021 causal report: „In angling, fishing pressure is regulated by the minimum size (currently 50 cm). However, only from a minimum size of 60 cm can one assume that the majority of these animals have already spawned once." ⚠️ Note two things. First, the order lists „lake/brown trout" as one single line — the authority follows exactly what GBIF says: one fish. Second, it „enters into force on 1 January 2026 and expires at the end of 31 December 2026": this is an annual order, re-issued every year. Check the version in force before your fishing day, not this article. The same amendment also puts all whitefish species under a year-round closed season — that is, the prey fish. The Swiss bank says the same: the Canton of St. Gallen's „Lake Constance Fishing Regulations 2026" list „lake trout | 01.11. – 10.01. | 60 cm". Two details there are widely missed: „closed seasons begin and end on the stated day at 12.00 noon" — midday, not midnight — and the minimum size is „the distance from the tip of the head to the end of the folded tail fin". And the pole appears there as statute: „All fishing is prohibited from 1 November to 31 January" at, among others, the Goldach mouth and the Steinach mouth. ⚠️ Two naming traps to close. In English, „lake trout" is a different fish — *Salvelinus namaycush* (GBIF 2351327), a North American char. And the „lake trout" of Lake Ohrid is Salmo letnica (GBIF 2351552), a species of its own, not this one.

Not the lake — the inflow

With this fish the question is not how well you read the lake, but whether the river that produces it is still open.
