Octopus: The Predator That Never Comes To You

For forty articles this series has been about a predator that comes to the lure: the asp on the current seam, the bonito under the birds, the turbot shooting up out of the sand. The question was always how to make it cover the distance. The octopus does not cover it. It lives somewhere — it does not roam. It sits in a hole, leaves at dusk, feels its way along under rocks and into crevices, and is back inside by dawn. Its working radius is so small that it overrides everything else, and from that follows the most practical sentence in this article: you are not fishing water, you are fishing stones. A cast three metres beyond the rock field is not a slower cast, it is an empty one. ⚠️ Octopus vulgaris Cuvier, 1797 (GBIF 2289671, family Octopodidae, order Octopoda, class Cephalopoda) — a mollusc, not a fish, and still one of the most effective predators your water holds.

It lives somewhere — and that changes everything

The Animal Diversity Web describes this animal’s daily life in three sentences that together amount to an entire fishing technique. First the den: “Some octopuses may occupy the same home for a longer period while others change holes several times over a few days.” Second the daily round: “They leave them at dusk for hunting trips and return at dawn.” Third the summary: “*O. vulgaris* seems to be a truly sedentary species.” MarLIN (species profile 1117) supplies the frame: a medium to large octopus reaching up to 1.3 metres, habitat “rocky coasts, shallow sublittoral”, depth range 0 to 200 metres, north-eastern limit in south-western Britain and the western English Channel, worldwide in temperate and tropical waters. For you that means something very concrete: the place you fish is not a bay, it is a rock field with holes in it — and the usable distance between your lure and an occupied hole is measured in metres, not in casting range. Fan-casting open sand is not inefficient for this predator; it has no addressee at all.

It tastes what it touches

The second reason distance decides so hard sits in its arms. Mather described in the *Journal of Zoology* in 1991 how young *Octopus vulgaris* hunt: “Juvenile *Octopus vulgaris* foraged by chemotactile exploration, mainly in crevices and under rocks.” They search chemotactilely — by touching and tasting — and they do it above all in crevices and under rocks; roughly 30 % of prey was eaten away from the den. The molecular basis came in 2020 in *Cell* (“Molecular Basis of Chemotactile Sensation in Octopus”, van Giesen, Kilian, Allard and Bellono): the suckers carry chemosensory cells with cephalopod-specific ionotropic “chemotactile receptors” that respond selectively to prey-derived molecules. The octopus literally tastes what it touches, and evaluates locally whatever its arms run into. ⚠️ That is exactly why a lure swimming half a metre off the bottom does not exist for it. It does not see it coming and does not swim out to meet it; it has to touch it, and it only touches things where its arms are already searching — on the rock, in the crevice, on the ground. A lure without bottom contact is not a poor lure for this animal, it is no lure at all.

The den stays, the tenant does not

Then comes the part almost nobody follows through. The Animal Diversity Web gives the lifespan of this species as “12 to 24 months” — one to two years, no more. It is semelparous: the female guards her eggs, “the female rarely leaves the egg mass”, and “females die shortly after the hatching of the last embryos.” A zander grows for years into the same edge, and knowing the edge means knowing the fish. With octopus the opposite holds: the den stays, the tenant does not. The hole you lifted an octopus out of in spring is very likely occupied again in autumn — but by a different animal, from a different year-class, that has learned nothing from you. That is why with octopus mapping pays and remembering individual fish does not. Your knowledge of the ground ages slowly; your knowledge of the animal does not age at all, because there is nothing to age. Work one rock field out properly — which hole, which depth, which edge — and you fish off it for years.

What that means for the line

  • Stones, not water: A cast only has an addressee if it lands within reach of a habitable hole. Work a small rock field thoroughly instead of spreading thin casts over a large area. The distance between lure and den is the only number that really counts with this predator.
  • Bottom contact is not a refinement, it is the condition: It searches chemotactilely in crevices and under rocks. The lure has to drag, hop and knock — scraping over the stone, not hovering above it. Anything that never touches the ground never enters its world.
  • The hour decides whether anyone is out at all: It leaves at dusk and returns at dawn. In daylight the same rock field can be full of octopus and still empty of hunting octopus — they are in the rock, not on it.
  • The take is not a knock, it is a state: Nothing taps. The bottom gets heavy — and stays heavy. Waiting for a signal that starts and stops means waiting for something this animal does not send. When in doubt, pull: “snagged” and “got one” feel identical for about two seconds.
  • Up immediately and without a break: It anchors itself to the rock with hundreds of suckers, and that is a contest you do not win. The first pull has to lift it clear and keep it clear; every pump, every yielding hands it the second it needs to grip again. After that it is over.

And now the papers in their own words, because there is an asymmetry here that hardly anyone knows. ⚠️ EU: Regulation (EU) 2019/1241 lists “Octopus (*Octopus vulgaris*) 750 g” as a minimum conservation reference size — in Annex V (North Sea, Part A), Annex VI (North Western Waters, Part A) and Annex VII (South Western Waters, Part A). Annex IX Part A, by contrast — the list for the Mediterranean — contains not a single cephalopod: the only molluscs there are the scallop *Pecten jacobeus* (10 cm), *Venerupis* spp. (25 mm) and *Venus* spp. (25 mm). So in precisely the sea where the octopus is the commonest target, the EU sets no minimum size for it. That is not a licence; it is the opposite. What counts there are national and regional rules — and those can be stricter. Croatia shows how strict. The *Pravilnik o sportskom i rekreacijskom ribolovu na moru*, NN 48/2026 (8 May 2026, in force since 1 June 2026), names the *hobotnica* (*Octopus vulgaris*) explicitly in Article 11(4) with 2 individuals — alongside groupers (1), *Eunice roussaei* (2) and Elasmobranchii (0). And Article 11(2) requires, verbatim: “Glavonošci ulovljeni u sportskom i rekreacijskom ribolovu koji se zadržavaju moraju biti označeni dubokim zarezivanjem glave u predjelu između očiju, osim liganja (*Loligo vulgaris*) i sipa (*Sepia officinalis*) namijenjenih za žive mamce.” Retained cephalopods must be marked by a deep notch in the head between the eyes — ⚠️ and the exception names only squid and cuttlefish intended as live bait, so for the octopus the duty applies without exception. Annex 1, Table 1 additionally lists the *hobotnica* as a species for which a catch record must be kept, and Article 8(1) is explicit: “Maksimalno ograničenje ulova po ribolovcu propisano je Zakonom te je zabranjeno nastaviti obavljati ribolov nakon dostizanja tog ograničenja” — the maximum per angler is set in the Act, and fishing must stop once it is reached. The permit and the local rule always apply.

Not the moment — the distance

With this predator what decides is not whether you react at the right instant but whether your lure ever came within its reach. Stones instead of surface area, bottom contact instead of a water layer, dusk instead of midday — and then a first pull that lifts it off the rock and never gives back. Whether an edge produces at all today additionally depends on light, wind, current, water temperature and season: on all the things that change while the chart stays the same.
